Staff Profiles

Carter Warr

Principal Architect, AIA, CSI, NCARB

Carter is passionate about architecture: the materials, the design, the environment that surrounds the structure, and the challenge of making it all work together. That is what makes architecture exciting for him. As Principal and President of CJW Architecture, Carter brings more than 25 years of experience to the firm. He combines his excellent design skills with hands-on experience in planning, estimating, and construction, providing his clients with the expertise of both architect and general contractor. His diverse interests—from theater and music to horsemanship, and his community service (Portola Valley Architectural Site Control Commission)—add to his creative, pragmatic designs.  

 

Prior to founding the company in 1988, Carter expanded his construction and operation experience by working as a General Superintendent for D. J. Marsolf Construction. He later held the position of Project Architect for Keller and Daseking Architects, leading educational and institutional projects. As an experienced architect, he has completed projects for educational, health care, housing, commercial, retail, industrial, and municipal works. He leads the programming, design, estimating, value engineering, and construction administration at CJW. Carter has a Bachelor of Architecture (Professional) degree from the University of Oregon at Eugene.

William Gutgsell

Architect

Mr. Gutgsell's background includes a highly successful track record in project and design management, contract documentation, budgeting, staffing and management, new business development, presentations, and RFP's. Bill has served a diverse client base, primarily on public works or public school projects within the Office of Regulation Services jurisdiction. In the last 28 years, Bill has worked almost exclusively on projects in aProject Manager or Principal-in-Charge role.


​Mr. Gutgsell's extensive school projects experience includes both private and public schools in many communities around the Bay Area.  Over the past 29 years, Bill’s school projects have included about 100 Master plans, needs asssements, ADA assessments, new construction, relocatables and renovation and modernization projects; plus about 75 deferred maintenance projects such as district wide reroofing, HVAC replacement, gas line replacement, swimming pool solar, retaining walls, etc.  Bill is a DSA approved project inspector for small projects which gives him a unique insight into the DSA process.

Kevin Schwarckopf

Architect

As a project Architect of CJW Architecture, Kevin provides the firm with a broad background in a variety of building types. Heads much to the quality of our projects and the diversity of our capabilities. Kevin has experience in both public and private sector projects.His experience includes education facilities, government agencies,health care and medical facilities, office buildings, fire stations,conference centers, laboratories, industrial facilities, restaurants,retail stores, and multi-family housing developments. He has proven skills in programming and design that have resulted in prototypical commissions.  Kevin has many years of experience with public sector projects,and program management for educational projects.

 

Prior to joining CJW, Kevin was one of two founding partners of CS Architects, located in western NY State. He has had the opportunity to delve into all aspects of a project and is able to provide everything from project direction to computer visualization. His most important commission in NY was the prototype design of ambulatory care centers for the largest healthcare system in the area. In addition, he headed the architectural division of a multi-disciplinary firm in Phoenix that specialized in educational facilities and fire stations. He was the main point of contact for four different School Districts in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Kevin serves as a Project Architect for CJW Architecture in a wide variety of projects, everything from residential work to civic master planning. As Associate Principal for the firm he coordinates the scheduling of office staff.

Wyatt Powell

Intern Architect

Mr. Powell has been working in the Architectural field for 14 years working with Project Architects and professionals to produce quality drawings for projects in Education, Medical, Residential & Commercial from design to construction documents.  

 

Prior to joining CJW Architecture Wyatt worked for WRD Architects where he prepared plans, sections, elevations and details, assisted in identifying and evaluating both state and federal regulations for educational facilities, Department of the State Architects Approvals and Californian Title 24 Compliance, accessed documents for ADA and building code compliance.  Wyatt was also a key participant in the project team that revised and incorporated AutoCAD standards for the firm.  

 

Wyatt is highly skilled in Building Information Modeling, 3D Rendering and Presentation Plans for clients.  Mr. Powell is currently taking his ARE exams to obtain an architectural license.
